Biography

BRUCE D. WHITE, D.O, J.D., is a board-certified pediatrician and attorney with fellowship training in clinical medical ethics. He came to St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona, from Nashville, Tennessee, in March 2004 to serve as a member of the general pediatrics residency and create a clinical ethics fellowship program for the hospital. Since 2006 he has served as chair of the department of pediatrics. His holds faculty appointments as Clinical Professor of Pediatrics in the University of Arizona College of Medicine and Clinical Professor of Pharmacy Practice and Science in the College of Pharmacy, Tucson; and Clinical Professor of Pediatrics in the Creighton University School of Medicine, Omaha. He also serves as Director of the campus-wide, interdisciplinary Healthcare Ethics and Law (HEaL) Institute at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama. Additionally, he is a Senior Fellow in the Center for Clinical Ethics at Summit Medical Center (the clinical ethics education service for HCA) in Nashville. He directs an interactive website—www.ethicsconsultant.com—which offers online clinical ethics coaching, mentoring, and educational services to a pilot group of hospitals nationwide.

Dr. White holds pharmacy and law degrees from the University of Tennessee; he is licensed to practice these professions in Tennessee. In 1981, he began studies at the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine of North Texas State University in Fort Worth and joined their department of medical humanities as assistant professor. In 1985, he began a pediatrics residency at Kosair Children’s Hospital, the pediatric teaching hospital of the University of Louisville. He served as chief resident in 1987-88. He is board-certified in general pediatrics by the American Board of Pediatrics. He completed a fellowship in clinical medical ethics at the University of Chicago Medical Center in 1991. From 1988-1998, he held faculty positions at Meharry Medical College and Vanderbilt University and clinical ethics positions with St. Thomas Hospital and Integrity Services, all in Nashville. From 1999 until his move to Phoenix he practiced general pediatrics with Centennial Pediatrics at their Bellevue office and was of counsel to Moody Whitfield & Castellarin in Nashville.

Over the past few years, Dr. White has contributed to a number of healthcare related journals and publications. Taylor & Francis published his second book, Drugs, Ethics, and Quality of Life in 2007. He is a member of the American Medical Association, American Health Lawyers Association, and a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He has been listed in Who’s Who in American Law (4th ed.) since 1984 and Who’s Who in America (54th ed.) since 1999.

Dr. White and his wife Sarah are native Tennesseans and the parents of three daughters, Elizabeth (born 1980) and Meredith and Rebecca (born 1982).
