Biography
Dr. Linda Scheirton came to Creighton University in 1998 and joined the Center for Health Policy and Ethics as a Faculty Associate in January 1999. She has interdisciplinary experience in bioethics, clinical practice, academic teaching and university administration. She has completed fellowship programs in philosophical ethics and clinical bioethics. Her interest in bioethics began in 1983 when she was chosen to participate in a National Endowment for the Humanities-funded Summer Institute on Health Care Ethics for Allied Health Faculty at the University of Kentucky. Her interest in the area grew exponentially and in the late 1980’s she completed a doctorate with an emphasis in higher education administration and bioethics from the University of Texas at Austin. During her studies, she was a Clinical Ethics Fellow at Loyola University of Chicago, School of Medicine, Medical Humanities Department. She has also been a Visiting Scholar at the Centre for Philosophy and Health Care at the University of Wales, University College of Swansea. She has lived and worked in several foreign countries- The Netherlands, United Kingdom, and Italy.
Dr. Scheirton has taught students and practitioners in dentistry, dental hygiene, nursing, medicine, pharmacy, occupational therapy, physical therapy and other health care disciplines. She has served as a member of three Hospital Ethics Committees and on the Ethics Consultation Service of two major medical center hospitals. She has been a health care professional association liaison to a state health regulatory board. She holds memberships in several health care and bioethics-related professional organizations such as the American Society for Bioethics and Society; European Society for Philosophy and Healthcare; Nebraska Coalition for Compassionate Care; International Dental Ethics and Law Society; and Professional Ethics in Dentistry Network. She serves as an editorial board member for HEC Forum (HealthCare Ethics Committee Forum: An Interprofessional Journal on Healthcare Institutions’ Ethical and Legal Issues) and reviewer for several other ethics-related journals. She is currently a co-investigator for a National Patient Safety Foundation grant entitled: Improve Patients’ Safety: Learning Model to Reduce Errors in Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy Practice.
