On June 5-6, 2008, Dr. Welie (along with Dr. Richard O'Brien) attended a Catholic Health Care Reform Consultation at Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana.

Dr. Welie has peer-reviewed contributions for the Journal of the American College of Dentists and for Medicine, Health Care and Philosophy.

On May 13, 2008, Dr. Haddad made an ethics presentation at the Center for Childhood Deafness at Boys Town National Research Hospital.

Richard O'Brien, MD

Presentations

On May 16, 2008, Dr. O’Brien made a presentation on health care reform in Nebraska to the Nebraska Association of Behavioral Health Organizations.

On May 29, 2008, Dr. O’Brien made a presentation on the Nebraska Medical Association Health Care Reform proposal to the Nebraska Health Summit at the UNMC College of Public Health. Read this Omaha World-Herald story about the report and  Dr. O'Brien's presentation.

Jos Welie, PhD

Publication

Dr. Welie co-authored an article with Dharamsi, Ardenghi, and Speers entitled "Conference Report – Human Rights and Oral Health Care: A Report of the 7th International Dental Ethics and Law Congress" which appeared in the May 2008 issue of the Journal of the Canadian Dental Association. Helen Stanton Chapple, PhD

Presentation

On April 1-3, 2008, Dr. Chapple attended and presented at the 2008 Annual conference of the Nebraska Hospice and Palliative Care Partnership in Lincoln, Nebraska.

On April 26, 2008, she served on a panel for the CME program, Addressing Health Disparities: Focus on HIV/AIDS.

Service

Dr. Chapple served as President at the Board Meeting and at the 30th Annual Conference of the Association for Death Education and Counseling, April 29 – May 3, 2008. She also presented a concurrent session at the conference as well.

Presentations

On April 2-4, 2008, Dr. Haddad presented at Southern Illinois University as the John and Marsha Ryan Bioethicist-in-Residence. Dr. Haddad's lecture entitled,"Residual Problems, Lingering Questions: The Nuance of Ethics in Hospice," explored the ethical end-of-life issues that carry over from the acute care to hospice setting.

 

Gail Jensen, PhD and Amy Haddad, PhD

Publication

CHPE Faculty Associate Dr. Gail Jensen and Dr. Amy Haddad have co-authored a chapter entitled, "Expertise and Clinical Reasoning" in the third edition of Clinical Reasoning in the Health Professions. Additionally, in the same publication, Dr. Jensen is a co-author of a second chapter entitled, "Clinical Reasoning in Physiotherapy."

 

Richard O'Brien, MD

Presentations

On April 17-19, 2008, Dr. O'Brien was the respondent to a paper, The Scandal of Poverty: The Option for the Poor Post-Katrina, presented by Bryan Massengale, at the Faithful Citizenship Symposium on campus, sponsored by the Kripke Center and the Graff Chair in Catholic Theology.

On April 26, 2008, Center members and associates Drs. Helen Chapple, Cam Enarson, Mark Goodman, John Stone and Richard O'Brien participated in a conference, Addressing Health Disparities: Focus on HIV/AIDS sponsored by HS-MACA, CHPE, Preventive Medicine and CME. Dr. O'Brien is a course director with Dr. Sade Kosoko-Lasaki, CU Associate Vice President for Health Sciences--Multicultural and Community Affairs. Dr. Pinch and Dr. Haddad have had a paper accepted for the 9th World Congress of Bioethics to be held in Rijeka/Opatija, Croatia in September 2008.  The paper is titled, "Crafting a Dream: Nursing and Health Care Ethics."

On April 2, 2008, Dr. Rentmeester made a podium presentation entitled "Ethics Consultation at the End-of-Life: Considering Moral Dimensions of Pain and Suffering" at the Nebraska Hospice and Palliative Care Partnership Annual Conference on Living a Good Life…at the End of Life in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Dr. Rentmeester is a reviewer for ethics submissions for the American Public Health Association Annual Meeting.

She is also a reviewer on the Education Sub-committee for the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities.

Dr. Welie gave a lecture, "Fed by Force of Law: Schiavo’s Shadow Over Nebraska and Beyond," at the Annual Congress of the Association for Death Education and Counseling which convened in Montreal, Canada on April 30-May 3, 2008.

John Carlson, PhD

Publication

Dr. Carlson, CHPE faculty associate and professor and chair of the Department of Philosophy, has had a textbook published by The Catholic University of America Press. It is titled Understanding Our Being: Introduction to Speculative Philosophy in the Perennial Tradition.

On March 8, 2008, Dr. John Stone attended the 17th Annual Ethics Symposium, Confronting Health Care Disparities: Social Constructs, Clinical Contexts, hosted by Kaiser Permanente Northern California Region in San Francisco where he twice presented "Community-Institution/System Collaboration and Eliminating Health Inequalities: Policy, Culture and Ethics."

On February 12, 2008, Dr. Richard O’Brien received recognition for 25 years at Creighton at the President’s Annual Convocation.

 

Christy Rentmeester, PhD

Presentations

Dr. Christy Rentmeester presented Trust, Translation, and Historical Remainders of Ethnonationalism in One Refugee’s HIV Care at the 2008 Annual Meeting of the Association for Practical Professional Ethics (APPE) [February 21-24, 2008].

At the same meeting Dr. Rentmeester presented in a session on Jim Dubois’s Ethics in Mental Health Research: Principles, Guidance, and Cases.

Service

Dr. Rentmeester will serve as a reviewer on the Education Programming Sub-Committee for the 2008 ASBH Meeting.

On February 8, 2008, Dr. John Stone presented Healthcare Ethics Committees and Organizational Ethics at the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Department of Medical Ethics, Workshop for Ethics Committee Members in Oakland, California.

On January 31, 2008, Dr. Chapple guest lectured on cultural relativism at UNMC.

Presentations

On January 10, 2008, Dr. Pinch provided an in-service program based on her research with parents of high-risk infants to the neonatal intensive care unit staff at UNMC.

 

Richard O'Brien, MD

Presentations

On January 21, 2008, Dr. O'Brien presented Health Care for All Nebraskans – Recommendations of the NMA Health Care Reform Task Force to the Creighton Student American Medical Association.

On January 24-25, 2008, Dr. O'Brien participated in the Ethics and Quality Colloquium at the California Pacific Medical Center Program in Medicine and Human Values where he led a discussion session on How to get the Attention of Hospital Administrators and Accreditation Officials: Effecting Institutional Change.

Publications

Dr. O'Brien had a paper accepted for publication in Cutis entitled "Ethical challenges of pregnancy risk management programs" by R. Bonebrake, A. Bones, M.J. Casey, C. Huerter, Bi Ngo, R. O’Brien, and M. Rendell.
