December 2008

Helen Stanton Chapple, PhD

Honors

In December 2008, Dr. Chapple graduated Summa Cum Laude from Creighton University School of Nursing with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and was inducted into the Sigma Theta Tau nursing honor society.

 

Richard O'Brien, MD

Presentations

Dr. O’Brien presented “Reforming Health Care: What Can We Expect from the New President and Congress?” to Women in Medicine and Science, Creighton University on December 2, 2008.

Dr. O’Brien was one of several panelists (including Dr. Christy Rentmeester) who presented at a "Public Forum: Defining the needs for health care reform" sponsored by Nebraska Appleseed Center for Law in the Public Interest and Health Care for America Now (HCAN) at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Student Union on December 15, 2008.

Dr. O’Brien also presented "Health Care Reform and the Congress and Administration" at the Omaha Kiwanis Club on December 19, 2008.

 

Winifred J. Ellenchild Pinch, EdD

Presentations

Dr. Pinch presented the lota Tau Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Induction address on December 14th on the Creighton University campus titled, “Research – A Necessary Evil?”

 

Christy Rentmeester, PhD

Presentations

Dr. Rentmeester was one of several panelists (including Dr. Richard O'Brien) who presented at a "Public Forum: Defining the needs for health care reform" sponsored by Nebraska Appleseed Center for Law in the Public Interest and Health Care for America Now (HCAN) at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Student Union on December 15, 2008.

Dr. Rentmeester was invited panel session lecturer: AIDS Week, Minority Health Science Student Association (MHSSA) and the Student National Medical Association (SNMA), Friday December 5th at noon.

Jos Welie, PhD

Presentation

Dr. Welie gave a talk to family caregivers of patients with Alzheimer’s dementia on December 5, 2008 at an assisted living facility in Omaha.

Publication

In the December 2008 issue of the Journal of the American Dental Association, an article appeared entitled “Preventing dentists’ involvement in torture: the developmental history of a new international declaration”. The article narrates the conception and birth of a new declaration – the text of which was drafted by Dr. Welie together with fellow members of the International Dental Ethics and Law Society in 2007 – that was subsequently adopted (with minor changes) by the FDI World Dental Federation; Dr. Welie is also the lead author of the JADA article.

Service

Dr. Welie was appointed as a member to one of the subcommittees created as part of the current university-wide strategic planning process; the subcommittee, which considers the building and assessment of Creighton’s identity, is chaired by Dr. Richard O’Brien.  

 

 

November 2008

Helen Stanton Chapple, PhD

Presentations

Dr. Chapple presented an ethics education opportunity at Creighton University Medical Center Anesthesiology Grand Rounds on November 19, 2008.

Dr. Chapple presented with a panel at the American Anthropology Association national conference on November 20 in San Francisco. The presentation was entitled: "Resistances to Re-Membering at the End of Life in the American Hospital."

 

Amy Haddad, PhD

 

Presentation

Dr. Haddad was the keynote speaker at the Seventh Annual Women’s Health in the 21st Century Conference on November 10, 2008 in Omaha.

Press

Dr. Haddad was quoted in an article in a November 24, 2008, article in the Omaha World-Herald about narrative medicine.

Publication

Dr. Haddad’s poem, “What If They Said . . . ?” was reprinted in Ars Medica: A Journal of Medicine, the Arts, and Humanities, Vol. 4 (2), p. 22, 2008.

Dr. Rentmeester's reviewed a manuscript this month for the International Journal of Feminist Approaches to Bioethics, Medical Education.  

 

John Stone, MD, PhD

Presentation

On November 6, 2008, Dr. Stone led a discussion about ethics and genetics with 7th class at Jesuit Middle School, Mr. Mike Mansour, teacher. Coordinator was Mark E. Patten, Sr., MPA, Program Supervisor – HS-MACA.

Service

Dr. Stone participated in community service as a volunteer under the legal supervision of Catholic Charities’ Immigration Legal Services of Omaha NE, Jaun Diego Center providing assistance with naturalization applications.

 

 

October 2008

Helen Stanton Chapple, PhD

Presentation

Dr. Chapple presented an ethics education opportunity at Creighton University Medical Center on October 16, 2008.

Dr. Chapple presented at the American Society of Bioethics and Humanities October 24, 2008 during their annual conference in Cleveland, Ohio.

Dr. Chapple attended the Mid-year Board Meeting of the Association for Death Education and Counseling as its Past President, Oct. 17 & 18, 2008.

On October 10, Dr. O'Brien presented "Health Care for All Nebraskans" for the Nebraska Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers.

On October 20, Dr. O'Brien presented "Comparing the candidates' health plans" at Dundee Presbyterian Church in Omaha.

On October 21, Dr. O'Brien presented "McCain and Obama health plans: what will they achieve? What will they cost?" at Nebraska Methodist College in Omaha.

On October 26, Dr. O'Brien presented "Comparing the candidates' health plans" at First United Methodist Church in Omaha.

Recognition

Dr. O’Brien received the Appreciation Award, Nebraska Medical Association, October 3, 2008.

October 9, 2008, Dr. Stone participated in a lecture/discussion on “Public Health: Challenges, Experiences, and the Future.” Health Administration and Policy Student Association.

 

Jos Welie, PhD

Presentation

Dr. Welie was an invited speaker (on informed consent) at the annual “Contemporary Catholic Health Care Ethics” conference, organized by the Neiswanger Institute for Bioethics and Health Policy at Loyola University Chicago (October 9-10).

Publication

Dr. Welie's article, co-authored with former CHPE Senior Visiting Fellow Dr. Wolter Brands, and entitled “Dentists in Double Trouble: The (un)fairness of punishing the same offence twice” has appeared in The Journal of the American Dental Association (2008, 139: 1249-1255).

Service

Dr. Welie was elected to the Rank and Tenure Committee of the School of Medicine and appointed to the Committee on Premed Advising in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Dr. Welie hosted Rev. Guy Consolmagno, SJ, PhD from the Vatican Observatory in Rome, Italy, on Oct 29-30, who was the invited keynote for the 2008 Faculty Seminar on Jesuit Higher Education.
