  • Dr. O’Brien presented “Reforming Health Care: What Can We Expect from the New President and Congress?” to Women in Medicine and Science, Creighton University on December 2, 2008.
  • Dr. O’Brien was one of several panelists (including Dr. Christy Rentmeester) who presented at a "Public Forum: Defining the needs for health care reform" sponsored by Nebraska Appleseed Center for Law in the Public Interest and Health Care for America Now (HCAN) at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Student Union on December 15, 2008.
  • Dr. O’Brien also presented "Health Care Reform and the Congress and Administration" at the Omaha Kiwanis Club on December 19, 2008.

  • Dr. Welie gave a talk to family caregivers of patients with Alzheimer’s dementia on December 5, 2008 at an assisted living facility in Omaha.
  • Publication

  • In the December 2008 issue of the Journal of the American Dental Association, an article appeared entitled “Preventing dentists’ involvement in torture: the developmental history of a new international declaration”. The article narrates the conception and birth of a new declaration – the text of which was drafted by Dr. Welie together with fellow members of the International Dental Ethics and Law Society in 2007 – that was subsequently adopted (with minor changes) by the FDI World Dental Federation; Dr. Welie is also the lead author of the JADA article.

  • Dr. Welie was appointed as a member to one of the subcommittees created as part of the current university-wide strategic planning process; the subcommittee, which considers the building and assessment of Creighton’s identity, is chaired by Dr. Richard O’Brien.

  • Dr. Chapple presented an ethics education opportunity at Creighton University Medical Center Anesthesiology Grand Rounds on November 19, 2008.
  • Dr. Chapple presented with a panel at the American Anthropology Association national conference on November 20 in San Francisco. The presentation was entitled: "Resistances to Re-Membering at the End of Life in the American Hospital."

  • Dr. Welie's article, co-authored with former CHPE Senior Visiting Fellow Dr. Wolter Brands, and entitled “Dentists in Double Trouble: The (un)fairness of punishing the same offence twice” has appeared in The Journal of the American Dental Association (2008, 139: 1249-1255).

  • Dr. Welie was elected to the Rank and Tenure Committee of the School of Medicine and appointed to the Committee on Premed Advising in the College of Arts and Sciences.
  • Dr. Welie hosted Rev. Guy Consolmagno, SJ, PhD from the Vatican Observatory in Rome, Italy, on Oct 29-30, who was the invited keynote for the 2008 Faculty Seminar on Jesuit Higher Education.
