Populations of other industrialized countries are healthier than Americans, with health care systems that cost much less. If saving individual lives is prized above all other values in the United States, why isn’t this orientation also the best value in health care? In this presentation we will explore three cultural ways that value is mystified in American health care: medical purity versus monetary legitimacy, technology as bearer and expression of values, and codifying the value of hospital care.
